Inspired by conversations about war and E.M. Forster’s The Machine Stops, First Draft takes us on a journey from a morning bicycle ride to a protection unit after an environmental disaster. This physical theatre piece of many voices explores a fast-paced world in contrast to a future world that exists in a protection unit far away from the Earth’s surface.
Originally performed in Toronto earning multiple awards at the U of T Drama Festival, the next iteration of the play went on to Camden People’s Theatre in London, UK and the Mimetic Festival in London, UK. In 2014 Open Heart Surgery Theatre teamed up with StudioZAT in Cairo, Egypt and, the play toured to Egypt and was performed in Arabic and English at Falaki Theater by six Egyptian actors.
